Bruxism Teeth Grinding | Welcome Smile Dental | Calgary Dentist

What is Bruxism?

Teeth Grinding, also known as Bruxism, can be damaging to your teeth. At Welcome Smile, our Team of Dental Professionals is here to help you find relief from this often painful condition.

People suffering from Bruxism can be known to grind, gnash, or clench their teeth. This can happen not only when you are asleep, but when you are awake also. If you are suffering Bruxism during sleep, you may have other sleep-related disorders such as snoring or pauses in breathing. Mild Bruxism can produce severe and frequent headaches, jaw pain, and even damaged teeth. You may have Bruxism and not even know it till complications develop.

How Bruxism Appliances Work

Treatment for your Bruxism will depend on the cause. Since there is no cure for Bruxism, options are available to relieve your symptoms so that the underlying cause can be dealt with.

Most times, Bruxism Appliances (mouth guards) can be the most effective solution for relieving Bruxism symptoms. Bruxism appliances are designed to position your jaw in a position that alleviates the jaw muscles while protecting your teeth from the damaging effects of tooth grinding.

Your first appointment involves taking a detailed impression of your teeth and a registration of how your teeth bite together. The impression is sent to our dental lab where it is fabricated. In 7-10 days, you will return to our office, and we will fit your appliance.

Caring for Your Bruxism Appliance

Proper care of your Bruxism Appliance is important. You will be provided with a case for you to store your appliance in when it is not in use. Keep the case in a secure location, away from the reach of small children and pets.

Cleaning your Bruxism Appliance daily with cool water and a denture brush will help keep it fresh and clean between use. Never use hot water or cleaners because both can alter the fit of your appliance.

Combination Therapy

Bruxism Splints are often used in conjunction with other TMJ Therapy treatments. Patients who suffer from headaches and migraines are often prescribed Bruxism Splints to help alleviate their symptoms.  Botox is another TMD Therapy that is used in conjunction with Bruxism Appliances.
